This section covers some useful information to consider before you embark on your own video project - hopefully it'll save you time and effort in the long run.

Preparation

Asking these questions early in the project will help you plan your video project.

  • Does a similar video clip that you can use already exist? Can you use it? Where could you look?
  • What is the purpose of the video clip and what are the learning objectives?
  • Which format is most suitable? Lecture, presentation, simulation, instruction, interview?
  • Which playback methods/devices does the intended audience have access to, or prefer?
  • How are you going to deliver the video to your audience? How will you make them aware of it?
  • Does the video contain date-related material? Will it be out-of-date and need updating?
  • Who are the "performers"? Staff, students, actors?
  • What equipment and resources do you need? Props, graphics, costumes?
  • Where's the video being recorded? Are there any issues? Background noise, lighting, access, permission?
  • Do you need a storyboard, treatment or script?
  • How much time is there for post production and who’s going to do it?
  • What are the legal/copyright issues?
  • When do you need this project to be completed?
